You might be hard-pressed to find someone with absolutely no distinct marks on their skin. While some are acquired over the course of life, others are with you from the day you’re born; these benign lifelong lesions are birthmarks. The term covers any irregularity in the skin that is present at birth (or appears during an infant’s first month). They are usually divided into two types, based on the underlying cause of their appearance and the way they show on the skin. Every one is as unique as the person who has it, and they can be a striking beauty mark or a frustrating source of shame.
Pigmented birthmarks are caused by an excess amount of the cells that dictate skin color. These include moles, which are caused by a high concentration in melanin in one small area. About 1 in every 100 babies are born with moles; they can also appear as a result of exposure to the UV radiation from sunlight. Most moles do not pose a significant risk of becoming cancerous melanomas, and are not painful, but can be a nuisance.
The other type of birthmark is vascular in nature, caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels. As a result, they appear red in color, and can range from a subtly pink hue to a dark wine red. Nearly half of all babies are born with ‘stork bites’, a malformation in the capillaries near the skin due to the stretching of blood vessels. They are usually temporary, and fade within the first three years of life. Port-wine stain birthmarks are usually large, irregularly shaped, and can be quite dark in appearance. Former Soviet Union head of state Mikhail Gorbachev has a very famous port-wine stain on his head.
Most birthmarks are entirely harmless, but are often removed or faded for cosmetic reasons.
